NEW RELEASE!

ARE WE THERE YET? NO.

Despite the undeniable gains over the last fifty years, women artists still have to prove their worth—literally, in the art market. […] “Famous” women artists, like Louise Bourgeois or Alice Neel or many of my own generation, tend to be either old or dead when they are recognized. And so it goes…We are not there yet, and too many of the texts in this rehash remain relevant.    —Lucy R. Lippard

FISHING IN GREEN, LIVING IN YELLOW

Black Box, Düsseldorf

Cinema in the Film Museum

Schulstraße 4

40213 Düsseldorf

June 18, 2025

8 p.m.

A short film program as part of the exhibition Fishing in Green, Living in Yellow, curated by the artists Liza Dieckwisch, Jungwoon Kim and Mirjam Pajakowski and realised in cooperation with the archive of the Filmmuseum, the Hans Hass Archive, sixpackfilm and Light Cone. In the foyer of the Film Museum, selected works by the artists as well as some objects by the Austrian marine researcher Hans Hass, kindly made available by Aquazoo Düsseldorf, will be presented.

The artists take us on a magical visual journey through experimental film – from 1931 to the present day. Humorous, critical, sometimes overwhelmingly beautiful, sometimes disturbing, the selected short films explore nature in all its relentless splendor.

During the break, guests can enjoy a green aperitif and an experimental amuse-gueule.

How do humans influence plant transformation processes, and what role does photosynthesis play in this? What opportunities and risks do adaptations entail, and what can we learn from nature?

In a dystopian, almost surreal atmosphere, transparent and luminous materials such as bioplastics made of agar-agar, silicone and latex are juxtaposed to explore the fluid boundaries between naturalness and artificiality and make them tangible for visitors. The artists are inspired by houseplants, algae production plants, deep-sea research, ghost mushrooms, bioluminescence and washed-up flotsam.

How do we shape nature – and how does it shape us? Technological interventions are changing our perception of what we perceive as natural. But how can we rethink our understanding of the connection between humans, nature and technology? With Fishing in Green, Living in Yellow, the artists create a space that is both organic and futuristic. The exhibition invites visitors to reflect on the fragility and beauty of nature and our complex relationship with it.

TRANSVERSE RIDE

Nilsson, Düsseldorf

Martinstraße 58

40223 Düsseldorf

July 19 - 21, 2024

What role does the interweaving of people with their environment play as part of a cosmic whole, and to what extent can inscribed memories be (re)revived through visual perception? Transverse Ride deals with the topography of travel and the dynamics generated between inner and outer worlds. Inspired by a road trip through several states in the USA, Mirjam Pajakowski's current cycle of works – based on notes, photos and memories – explores the sharp contrast between the vibrant urban centres and remote natural spaces of America. Above all, however, the exhibition deals with a very elementary motif: the search for authenticity.

CARNAL DISORDER

October 09 - 21, 2020

Feeling is seeing is believing. Carnal Disorder by Mirjam Pajakowski takes place in the flesh. The focus is the human body and, more specifically, the artist’s body, so it’s an intense personal journey presented in a somatic dialectic – a sometimes gentle, sometimes horrifying nonverbal take on the consistency and fragility of what is considered breathing and pulsating physicality. Enclosed in a very confined space, the subconsciousness becomes literate, nightmares and dreamscapes slashing themselves ways into explorations of bodily disintegration or into a duality of material and vision. We can see the body invaded by metamorphosis and constant transition, illuminated by different stages of the working process, although every step of the way becomes an integral part of the body of work and the work of the body. Tangible and ephemeral at the same time, the objects seem to move into unknown territory – photography, paintings and sculptures blend expansively, all carved out of the obsessions and passions of the artist’s mind. As tender as it may appear, it seems to implode in an act of ruthless violence, each piece simultaneously birthed of beauty and abjection. Carnal Disorder can be experienced as a reflective series of experiments on the dichotomy of impermanence and imagination – but on its most primitive layer, it grabs us by the neck and shakes around our most quintessential sentiments: we’re inevitably made of broken parts and put together in an abstract way. Long live the new flesh – in everlasting osmosis.
